HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council has a light agenda on Tuesday.

The council will seek approval of an ordinance to reallocate funds from a previous bond issue used in the third phase of the North Main Street project. That project ended up with about $430,000 left over. The plan is to use those funds for the next phase of the project, which is set to begin later this fall, allowing the city to bond less money.

The council will also take action on how a Byrne Justice Assistance grant will be used by the police department. The grant, which is used for needed items, first aid kits, information help, and other soft items, is taking a more serious turn. Police plan to use the $22,000 to purchase rifles. Chief Jeff Hooper would like to have every patrol vehicle equipped with rifles. He said in his proposal to the council that it’s not a matter of if we’ll have an active shooter situation, but when.

The chief says he’s committed to getting every one of his officers rifle certified. Additionally, the department has set up its new vehicle fleet with a rifle mount in every car.

The council will set a public hearing for property owners who have structures that have recently been deemed unsafe or structurally deficient. There are 13 properties on the current list. The council is also set to approve the low bid for Ward Davis Builders of Hutchinson for the restroom renovation at Fun Valley at a cost of $149,760.
