One of three men suspected in the kidnapping and beating of a Nickerson man entered a plea as charged this morning, that being 28-year-old Jedrik Smith.

He’s charged with aggravated kidnapping, conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, aggravated intimidation of victim or witness, criminal threat, possession of methamphetamine, criminal use of a weapon.

He along with 26-year-old Jeremia Palmer, and 29-year-old Zachary Lawson are alleged to have kidnapped and beat of 28-year-old Larry McVey, this occurring back on September 11, 2011.

Smith also entered a plea to a charge of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and theft of motor fuel going back to July 7, 2011. That case started around 4:45 a-m, when officers were dispatched to the Kwik Shop at 43rd and Plum regarding the theft of gas.

At one point, he ignored the verbal command and began to drive away. An officer providing assistance to another became entangled in the driver’s side door jam as the Smith drove away. As a result, the assisting officer was dragged a short distance causing injuries to his arm, leg and head. The original officer fired their weapon at the suspects car. Smith was not injured and continued to flee. Smith eventually wrecked his vehicle in a ditch and fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later in the area northwest of 38th and Severance.

Sentencing in the case will be set for next month.
