Tour de Salt set for Oct. 13

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It’s always a fun and unique way of seeing the Strataca Underground Salt Museum. On Sunday, Oct. 13, Strataca will host the annual Tour de Salt bicycle ride.

Declared the only ride of its kind in North America, riders will get to tour the museum and mine 650 feet below. Registration can be done at www.bikereg.com/42803 and riders must check in 30 minutes prior to their bike ride time. Late arrivals are not guaranteed to participate. There are no refunds for this event and there’s a 10-year-old age limit. The registration deadline is this Saturday, Oct. 12.

This is a 3.5-mile bike ride. Bikes should be mountain type bikes or at least gravel or hybrids with wide tires. All riders must wear a bicycle helmet (ANSI or Snell Certified) at all times while in the mine. Handlebar or helmet-mounted light under 350 lumens are required with at least a one-hour run time. No blinking lights are allowed. Its 68 degrees in the mine so dress accordingly.

If you choose to just come and watch, tickets are available for $10 as space allows.
