HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The first major cold snap of the year is upon us. Many will be turning their furnace on for the first time since spring.

There are a few things you need to remember when turning up the heat. First of all, test smoke alarms. It is important to have smoke alarms on every level of the home, inside each sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. If possible, smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.

Test carbon monoxide alarms. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless. Exposure to even small quantities can cause flu-like symptoms. Higher levels can be dangerous. Test and replace detectors as needed.

If your system is blowing cold air, try turning your emergency switch off for 30 seconds and then turn it back on again.

One of the more common reasons your furnace won’t come on or blow hot air is a dead battery in the thermostat.

Make sure your thermostat is on and that the batteries are working properly. Finally, make sure your furnace is serviced and all filters are in good shape.
