A 31-year-old Hutchinson man arrested back on May 25th, after he allegedly entered a Hutchinson woman’s home and attempted to take the keys to her vehicle was in court Wednesday where his attorney requested a mental evaluation.

Joshua Bourell is jailed on a 100-thousand dollar bond and his attorney, Kelly Driscoll told the judge that her client has a history of mental illness dating back as far as at the age of 13. She doesn’t believe that he is receiving the medication that he needs in the Reno County Jail. Judge Joe McCarville who admitted he knows the defendant agreed on his mental history and granted the request. He will be sent to Horizon’s Mental Health Center in Hutchinson for the evaluation, where he has apparently been getting therapy.

Charges against Bourell include attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, criminal threat, and three counts of auto burglary.

According to Police Sgt. Rob Rowe, Bourell was walking down west B, trying to break into vehicles and in some cases succeeding, then asking people for their keys, and everyone turned him down, so he allegedly entered a home in the 600 block of West B and tried to get a woman’s keys by force, and possibly other items. This reported just after 9 p-m, on May 25th. The woman had two small children in the home at the time.

A neighbor apparently observing him knew he shouldn’t be in that home and confronted him in the home and he was held until police could arrive. He was apparently telling people he needed to get out of town.

Bourell has a long rap sheet with convictions in Reno, Saline and Douglas counties.

His case is now on hold while the mental evaluation is complete.
