BNSF’s numbers sluggish in 3Q report

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Flooding and lower energy prices continued to eat into BNSF’s bottom line.

The Nations’s second-largest railroad reported lower numbers in the third quarter when compared year-over-year. Third-quarter revenue totaled $6.02-billion, a drop of 2 percent although lower operating expenses offset that total to bring the railroad a net income of $1.4 billion which is a 5 percent increase.

Car loadings fell in every category as the flooding in Iowa and Nebraska continues to hamper train movements. Total volume was 2.6 million cars, a drop of 3 percent.

Tyson Foods is the next company with ties to the Hutchinson area to report its quarterly earnings. Those numbers will be released on Nov. 12.
