WICHITA – At approximately 10:00 a-m, Thursday morning, a Sedgwick County Sheriff Deputy recruit was injured during a training exercise at the firearms range.
A bullet struck the metal frame of the target system and ricocheted, striking the deputy in the right thigh.
The deputy was taken to Via-Cristi St. Francis Regional Medical Center by Sedgwick County EMS in serious condition. But, hospital staff determined the injury to be minor, and the deputy was released and went back to work.
Officials say it appears that all the safety protocols were being followed at the time of the incident.
The deputy is a 26-year-old recruit, currently attending the academy.
