The Hutchinson School Board Monday reviewed fund raising within the district, and the new processes that are being implemented for the 2012-13 school year.

Like most school districts, taxpayer funding is augmented in USD 308 by student, parent and community fund raisers. For 2011-12, an incomplete listing estimated that more than $377,000 was raised through fund raisers.

In terms of taxes, since 1 mill of property taxes raises about $195,000, it would be the equivalent of nearly 2 mills of taxes. On a per-student basis, it is the equivalent of $75 per student in the district.

The money and other items donated are used for a wide range needs in the district – from basic student supplies to field trips to meals and travel for teams to playground equipment.

The district has moved to a more organized way of tracking fundraisers, designed to give staff a better idea of how much money is raised and to help organizations determine how successful different types of fundraisers are.

The board also approved an administrative job swap. Jeanne Stroh will change jobs with Donna Davis, beginning July 1. Stroh has been the director of elementary education and will become the assistant superintendent. Davis will return to her former position of executive director of secondary learning.

The two are working together on the job swap. Stroh is working to finish her doctorate in education later this year from Kansas State University and wanted a broader experience in district-wide administration.

The job changes were initiated by the pair, who work closely together in their jobs. It is similar to a job swap Superintendent Shelly Kiblinger had with another colleague in Garden City USD 457 prior to coming to USD 308.

Also during Monday’s meeting the board, they approved final budget transfers for the 2011-12 school year. The district’s fiscal year goes from July 1 to June 30.

They also set Aug. 18, 2012, as the Board retreat, approved the Kansas State Department of Education Child Nutrition Wellness program agreements for 2012-13, approved the purchase of three convection ovens and milk cooler from Nutrition Services funds and approved the worker’s compensation contract for 2012-13 with Fee Insurance.
