JUNCTION CITY – Officials have opened East Ash Street after a Union Pacific coal train derailed in Junction City on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 5 p-m, on South Washington Street near Interstate 70. Approximately 30 coal cars derailed near exit 296 on I-70.

There are no reported injuries.

There is no indication as to the cause of the accident or where it was headed. Geary County Emergency Management officials, Geary County Sheriff’s deputies and officers of the Junction City Police Department are on scene.

Union Pacific officials from Salina are expected to determine whether they can move the train later this evening. A clean-up crew from Union Pacific is also on scene.
