After making a substantial recovery in the water level over the past several months, the lake level at Cheney Reservoir is falling again.
Water usage in Wichita, and evaporation due to the hot dry conditions has the lake 3-feet below normal pool. Lake levels had been increasing over the spring after the lake feel five feet below normal leaving boat ramps inaccessible. Despite the lower level, Lake manager Ryan Stucky says all is not bad.
Stucky says the low water level actually leaves a little more beach area for lake users and as long as the boat ramps are usable there’s really no problem. With the holiday in the middle of the week, Stucky does not anticipate the usual crowd of about 55,000 to visit as compared with a weekend holiday like Memorial Day. Still, he expects a steady crowd through out the week. Stucky also wants to remind all visitors that fireworks are prohibited through out the lake.
