The Kansas Underground Salt Museum’s decision to participate in a national program promoting free admission for U.S. Troops is producing a heart-warming and rewarding experience, according to executive director Linda Schmitt.

The free offer began Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day. Schmitt said the Salt Museum has already welcomed 435 troops and their families as part of the Blue Star Museum project. “And their response as been so amazing,” she added.

Gayle Ferrell, Director of Operations said her staff has reported numerous comments by military members expressing their appreciation. She cited situations such as the father who was in Kansas for only a short time to see his son before watching him be deployed; the mom with her family enjoying time with her military grandson; and the military dad who was overjoyed that he could offer the full underground experience to his children for just the nominal cost of adding the tram and train rides.

This program is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America. “This is both an opportunity to thank military families for their service and sacrifice, as well as a chance to create connections between museums and these families that will continue throughout the year,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. “Especially for families with limited time together, those on a limited budget, and ones that have to relocate frequently, Blue Star Museums offers an opportunity to enjoy one another and become more fully integrated into a community.”

The Kansas Underground Salt Museum is located at 3504 East Avenue G in Hutchinson. It is open Tuesday through Sunday and is handicapped accessible. Because entrance is limited by elevator capacity for the 650′-ride down to the museum, reservations are recommended to ensure a timely visit.
