Reno County man formally charged after August accident

A Reno County man was in court Wednesday morning to hear the formal charges of aggravated battery and driving while intoxicated, the result of an accident allegedly involving his pickup and an ATV.

Derek Horsch is alleged to have injured a Mt. Hope man who was on an ATV back on August 21st, in the area of Parallel and Victory Roads., near his house.

Three individuals left the house on ATV’s, but only one had lights. Horsch decided to get in his Chevy truck and try and catch up to provide light for them.

Scott Smith, of Mt Hope was on one of the ATV’s and was stopped in the roadway on a bridge and Horsch ran into the back of the ATV knocking Smith off. He was badly injured and taken to a Wichita hospital. Horsch was not injured, however he was arrested for aggravated battery, and DUI.

His case will now be placed on a future waiver-status docket.
