One of three men believed involved in the kidnapping and beating of a Nickerson man and who entered a plea as charged in the case, as well as another involving flee and elude will be in prison for the next 16+ years. 28-year-old Jedrik Smith was sentenced to 196-months for both cases Friday by District Judge Joe McCarville.

Smith was found guilty of aggravated kidnapping, conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, aggravated intimidation of victim or witness, criminal threat, possession of methamphetamine and criminal use of a weapon.

He along with 26-year-old Jeremia Palmer, and 29-year-old Zachary Lawson are alleged to have kidnapped and beat of 28-year-old Larry McVey, with this incident occurring back on September 11, 2011.

Smith was also sentenced for the aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and theft convictions going back to July 7, 2011.

That case started around 4:45 a-m, when officers were dispatched to the Kwik Shop at 43rd and Plum regarding the theft of gas. At one point, Smith ignored the verbal command and began to drive away. An officer providing assistance to another became entangled in the driver’s side door jam as the Smith drove away. As a result, the assisting officer was dragged a short distance causing injuries to his arm, leg and head. The original officer fired his weapon at the suspects car, but Smith was not injured and continued to flee. He eventually wrecked his vehicle in a ditch and fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later in the area northwest of 38th and Severance.

Judge McCarville ran each count in the cases concurrent to each other, but then ran the sentences in the two cases consecutive to each other for a total of 196-months.

The cases against Palmer and Lawson for kidnapping and aggravated battery are still awaiting a preliminary hearing.
