The man who was allegedly caught with a stolen vehicle then later informed authorities that he was mixing chemicals in his bathtub causing a whole east side neighborhood to be blocked off and some residents forced from their homes finally made an appearance in court Tuesday.

46-year-old Michael Ahlstedt of 1415 East 3rd was formally charged with possession of stolen property for being in possession of a 1994 Dodge Intrepid reportedly stolen in Wichita. He was able to post bond of 15-hundred dollars after the initial arrest and then after that is when he reported mixing chemicals in his bathtub.

For most of the day back on July 10, the area just east of K-61, along 3rd Street was closed to Porter. Hoagland was also blocked south of 4th Street after Hutchinson Haz-Mat crews had to respond to the situation. Ahlstedt also indicated that there may be explosive devices inside the residence leading to the Wichita Bomb Squad being brought in. They didn’t find any explosives after using a robot to search the residence. That allowed the Haz-Mat team to dissolve the chemicals and residents were allowed back home.

He’s not been charged with any crime associated with that incident at his home.

He will be back in court in the near future where his case will be placed on waiver-status docket.
