After a 24-year-old Hutchinson man’s attorney asked for a continuance of the trial expected to begin this week, it was granted By Judge Tim Chambers over the objection of District Attorney Keith Schroeder who told the judge they were ready to proceed.

Judge Chambers decided to grant the continuance in the case against Salvador Araujo-Gutierrez after Public Defender Sarah Sweet McKinnon indicated she hasn’t been able to talk with her client because he’s being house in Butler County. The judge says he doesn’t want anyone to go to trial if they haven’t been able to talk with their attorney.

Araujo-Gutierrez is accused of the alleged sexual abuse occurring over a period of time starting in 2006, with the last occurring back in 2011. The incidents occurring when the child was first 7-years-old and continued till she was 11. All of the charges are Jessica’s Law charges meaning that Araujo-Gutierrez could be looking at multiple life sentences.

The trial is now re-set for September 18, and the judge also asked McKinnon to prepare a transport order so that the defendant is brought back to Reno County one week prior to the start of trial, so she has an opportunity to visit with her client.

The judge says this case will have first consideration on that date, meaning it will go before any other cases.
