WICHITA – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office is investigating another attempted suicide inside the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.
It was on August 28, just before 10 p-m when detention staff found a 30-year-old inmate attempting suicide, apparently alone in his cell. He had wrapped a telephone cord around his neck. Officials say the cords had been shortened in an attempt to prevent this hazard.
The staff administered first-aid and he was quickly revived. He was eventually taken to a Wichita hospital where he’s in critical condition.
The inmate, who had not been identified was booked that same night just before 8:30 p-m.
Officials say since January of 2011, 54-inmates have attempted suicide in the facility and two who were successful within the same time frame.
They says they place an emphasis on inmate safety to include annual training for detention staff members on suicide prevention.
