WICHITA – Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston, who prosecuted several high-profile murder cases, has decided not to seek re-election.

Foulston announced her decision to her staff and colleagues Friday. She says, she will enter private practice when her current term expires in January 2013.

She says she’s had a wonderful experience as head of the D-A’s office, but now after 30-years in the office, wants to become of a private citizen once again.

She was first elected in 1988, and was re-elected five times by Sedgwick County voters.

Foulston was involved in some of Kansas’ most noteworthy criminal trials including the 2005 prosecutor of Dennis Rader, known as the BTK killer, and the trial of Scott Roeder, who killed abortion provider Dr. George Tiller. She says her office has prosecuted serial killers, rapists, child molesters and other criminals and juvenile offenders who have committed vicious crimes against our citizens. We have seen the tragedy of crime as it has unfolded over the years; the most atrocious killings and brutal assaults of innocent victims; the heartbreak that these crimes have brought to the families and to the community. She adds, “My office has zealously prosecuted these offenders to conviction.”

She says on the D-A website, “we have worked tirelessly to protect children who are victims of sexual assault, abuse or neglect and continue to prioritize the rights of all victims, including the most vulnerable.”

But, she says one of her best memories will be getting at argue before the U-S Supreme Court twice, saying, “Most in this country have never had the opportunity even once.”

The 60-year-old Foulston was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, but she said the disease is in remission and her health did not influence her decision.
