GARDEN CITY – Terrell Lane’s first carry of the game was a hard-charging 36-yard bolt for a first down. That was a mere foreshadow of the performance that the Hutchinson Community College sophomore running back was about to deliver on Saturday night in a key Jayhawk Conference battle at Memorial Stadium.

Lane broke Mack Herron’s 45-year-old single-game rushing record, going for a staggering 308 yards as No. 14 Hutchinson out-gunned No. 19 Garden City 63-49 in an incredible offensive shootout that called for a major revision of the Blue Dragon offensive record book.

Lane garnered his record 308 yards on just 29 carries (10.6 yards per carry). He had seven runs of 10 yards or more, including rushing touchdowns of 5, 64 and 59 yards. Herron, who went on to play at Kansas State and in the NFL with the New England Patriots, rushed for 305 yards against Northern Oklahoma in 1967. This was the first 200-yard rushing game since Chris Clay went for 231 yards in the 2009 season opener against NEO.

But there was more to Lane’s performance than just running the ball. He was also a key figure in the passing game out of the backfield for quarterback Luke Barnes. Lane had career highs of six receptions for 42 yards and two receiving touchdowns of 2 and 19 yards.

Lane finished the night with a career-high 350 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns. Lane also averaged 42 yards per punt on three punts.

There were several other records either broken or tied for the Blue Dragons on Saturday night:

+ HCC set a new school record with 716 yards of total offense.

+ Barnes tied a record with six touchdown passes.

+ Sophomore place kicker Michael Mesh broke the career record for extra points with 95.

+ The 112 combined points set a team record.

The combined offensive numbers in this game were simply mind-boggling.

A combined total of 152 offensive snaps accounted for 49 first downs and 1,265 yards. There were 39 plays of 10 yards or more, 16 kickoff returns that averaged 21 yards per return and only four punts. Hutchinson averaged 8.0 yards per play and Garden City averaged 8.9 yards per play. There were a combined 29 offensive possessions, in which 16 finished in touchdowns.

The Blue Dragons (2-1, 2-0 Jayhawk Conference) had 90 offensive snaps and 30 first downs. HCC rushed for 357 yards on 44 total carries, posting 13 passes and eight rushes of 10 yards or more.

Barnes completed 29 of 46 passes to seven different receivers for 359 yards. It’s the second time in three games Barnes has broken 300 yards and five touchdowns in a game.

Sophomore Jatavius Stewart had seven receptions for 138 yards to become the sixth Blue Dragon ever to reach 1,000 career receiving yards. He now has 1,028 yards. Stewart jumped from No. 9 to No. 4 in career receptions with 62. He now has 18 career touchdowns and 108 career points.

Sophomore Kody Cook had a career high in receptions for a second-straight game with six catches for 45 yards. Sophomore Antonio Johnson had four receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns.

The Blue Dragons had three players – Lane, 350; Stewart, 199; and Cook, 115 – to have 100 all-purpose yards.

Garden City (2-1, 1-1) had its share of offensive playmakers in racking up 549 total offensive yards (405 passing, 144 rushing). Garden City had 11 passes and seven rushes of 10 yards or more.

Broncbuster quarterback Nick Marshall completed 18 of 33 passes for 405 yards and five touchdowns.  He also rushed for 52 yards and scored once. Rodriquez Coleman had eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Raul Silva caught for balls for 133 yards and two TDs. Tyreek Hill had three catches for 125 yards and one touchdowns. Hill also turned in a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half. Hill had 255 all-purpose yards. The Busters had four players with more than 100 all-purpose yards.

With all of that offense, the Blue Dragons did get some key defensive stops, intercepting Marshall four times. Freshman Terrell Hannah had two interceptions, while Kenny Flowers and Shattle Fenteng had one each.

There were five touchdowns in the first quarter alone. HCC started things with a seven-play 69 yards march that took just 2 minutes, 10 seconds. Lane bowled in from 5-yards out, but the extra point was blocked. Garden City then went 75 yards in 10 plays and took a 7-6 lead on Marshall’s 1-yard quarterback sneak with 8:08 to go.

Then the big plays started coming with frequency.

After the Busters got a defensive stop, Marshall connected with Hill for a 77-yard touchdown strike on the second play of the possession for a 14-6 lead. The Dragons needed just one play to answer as Lane showed incredible balance and power on his 64-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 14-13 with 2:59 to play. Just 22 seconds later, Silva hauled in a 68-yard strike from Marshall for a 21-13 Garden City lead.

Hutchinson answered that with a 15-play, 66 yard scoring drive that was capped by a 2-yard TD reception from Barnes to Lane to cut the lead to 21-20 with 12:19 to play in the second quarter.

The Dragons got a huge defensive stop when Flowers intercepted Marshall and set up the offense at the HCC 33. Eight plays later, Lane’s 19-yard touchdown reception and a two-point pass from Barnes to Johnson gave HCC a 28-21 lead with 8:23 to go in the first half.

After the Dragons gambled on fourth down with a missed fake punt, the Busters had only 30 yards to go to tie the game. It took five plays, but Marshall found Silva with a 3-point TD pass to tie the game at 28-all with 1:44 to go until halftime.

The third quarter turned out to be the decisive quarter for Hutchinson, but Garden City fired the first salvo when Hill caught the ball 1-yard deep in the end zone and sprinted through the HCC coverage team for officially a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 35-28 Buster lead.

That turned out to be the only third-quarter touchdown for Garden City and HCC outscored the Busters 21-7. On consecutive possessions, Barnes threw touchdown passes of 44 to Stewart, 24 to Johnson and 41 to Stewart to give Hutchinson a 49-35 lead after three quarters. The Blue Dragons had 228 yards total offense in the third quarter alone.

Garden City refused to go away in the fourth quarter, but for every Buster score, the Dragons had the answer.

Coleman caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Marshall to get the game to one possession again at 49-42 with 14:56 to play in the final quarter. Barnes then guided a nine-play, 74-yard scoring drive and threw his sixth touchdown pass of the game, 33 yards to Johnson for a 56-42 lead with 11:56 to go.

James Kelly then reeled in a 30-yard touchdown reception with 5:18 to go to bring Garden City back with 56-49. HCC answered three plays later when Lane broke loose for a 59-yard touchdown run at the 4:15 mark for a 63-49 Blue Dragon lead.

HCC finally finished off the Busters on Garden City’s next offensive play when Hannah second interception of the game stopped the Busters last legitimate chance to get back into the game.

On HCC’s next play, Lane burst up the middle 10 yards, which moved him past Herron for the single-game rushing record.

The Blue Dragons return home next Saturday for their only home game in the month of September when Dodge City comes to Gowans Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Coming into the game, HCC had just one sack and four TFLs. … Tyreek Hill’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown is the longest ever returned against HCC.
