A 23-year-old Hutchinson man who’s on community corrections for convictions of aggravated battery, theft, sale of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia for growing marijuana and no tax stamp made a first appearance Monday morning on new charges.

Leonardo J. Velázquez-Vieyra was arrested Friday afternoon on charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and felony theft. The case apparently involves the mother of his child and started with a domestic dispute Thursday evening, where he allegedly held the victim against her will, caused injury with a vehicle, caused her to fear for her safety and allegedly take a vehicle without permission.

In court, he appeared via-video from the Reno County Jail and was told of the potential charges. He asked for a reduction of the 131-thousand, 500-dollar bond. The state represented by Andrew Davidson told the judge that it should stay the same based on his criminal history. It was never mentioned in court, but he has four drug cases pending, in fact is scheduled for court Wednesday as part of the waiver-status docket.

He also faces prison if he’s found to be violation of his community corrections for cases going back to 2006, and 2009, one of which involves the shooting of a Hutchinson man, Jordan Thomas. Thomas and another man had shown up at an apartment where in east Hutchinson where Velázquez-Vieyra was staying, and Thomas was shot in the face with a shotgun. He lost his left eye as a result.
