RENO, Nev. (AP) – Members of a Kansas family say they won’t let the death of their matriarch in that tragic crash at the Reno Air Races keep them from holding their annual, mini-family reunion at the event in the years ahead.

Seventy-one-year-old Cherie Elvin was among the 11 people killed at Reno-Stead Airport five days ago. Her husband, two adult sons and one of their wives were among the 70 injured.

On Wednesday, one of her unhurt sons, Jim Elvin, gathered with other family to tell reporters his mother died doing what she loved best and there “wasn’t anyplace else she’d rather be.”

Cousin Allen Martin Elvin says the family wants everyone to know that as tragic as it was, Cherie wouldn’t want the accident to bring an end to the air races.

Cherie Elvin was a graduate of Hutchinson High School, while her husband was a graduate at Haven High School.
