Four different players scored two goals each as the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team won its third in a row after a 9-1 Jayhawk Conference victory over Garden City on Wednesday at the USD 308 Athletic Complex.

Freshman Melissa Hetherington had her fourth multi-goal game in her last six games to lead another dominant offensive attack against the winless Broncbusters (0-6, 0-4 Jayhawk Conference).

Sophomore Ashley Burnett had her first multi-goal game of the season, while freshmen Shelbi Otte and Nicole Cronin posted their first career multi-goal games. Sophomore Alicia Robinson also scored for the Lady Dragons (6-2, 4-1 Jayhawk Conference).

Sophomores Pearl Slattery and Logan Shupe each had two assists.

“I thought for awhile, we played some really good soccer,” said HCC head coach Sammy Lane, who secured his 97th career victory at Hutchinson. “We scored some high-caliber goals.”

The Lady Dragons did surrender their first goal in seven games, coming up one minute short of tying the program record for scoreless minutes. HCC hadn’t allowed a goal (the two losses were forfeits) in 615 minutes. The team record was 616 minutes.

Hutchinson out-shot Garden City 30-6 and 14-1 in shots on goal.

Hutchinson started quickly once again, scoring in the first two minutes for the fifth time in 2011 when Cronin netted her first career goal which was unassisted just 1 minute, 27 seconds into the game.

HCC kept steady offensive pressure through, building a 4-0 lead after goals from Otte (from Sydney Armstrong) in the 15th minute, Hetherington (from Slattery) in the 17th minute and Robinson (from Polly New) in the 28th minute.

Garden City finally snapped HCC’s scoreless minutes streak when Stephanie Brown scored in the 40th minute.

Hutchinson quickly responded when Cronin, playing just her fourth game after starting the season injured, scored her second of the game 59 seconds later from a Chloe Basnett assist to lead 5-1 at halftime.

Burnett scored Hutchinson’s sixth and seventh goals and led 7-1 in the 58th minute. Otte scored her second of the game in the 61st minute and Hetherington finished scoring with her second of the game and team-high 15th of the season in the 75th minute.

Hutchinson will play host to Barton at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the USD 308 Athletic Complex. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but had to be moved because of the Club Azzurri Fall Tournament at the USD 308 Athletic Complex.
