WICHITA – (AP) A man who survived the 1970 plane crash that killed 31 players coaches and boosters of the Wichita State football team plans to go a long way to honor the victims this year. Rick Stephens will ride his bicycle 550 miles to the site of the plane crash in Colorado. He is asking for donations to the WSU Foundation for a scholarship fund for family members of the crash victims.
Stephens, who is now 63, was one of nine people to survive the crash about 40 miles west of Denver. The plane was on its way to a Wichita State football game. The Wichita Eagle reports that Stephens says he will carry small flags bearing the name of each victim, which he plans to post along the road as he rides.
