Freshman Shayne Haley had a combined 24 kills on Friday, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team suffered two losses to open the 2011 Caribbean Tan Classic at the Sports Arena.
Hutchinson opened the day taking the first set from No. 14 Seminole State, but the Trojans rolled after that, defeating HCC 21-25, 25-13, 25-11, 25-19.
Then for the second time in three days, the Lady Dragons built a 2-0 lead only to see the match slip through their fingers as Jefferson College rallied back for a 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-12 victory in the final match of Friday.
Hutchinson (6-13) will play Missouri State University-West Plains at 11 a.m. and Frank Phillips College at 3 p.m. on Saturday to close out the Caribbean Tan Classic. West Plains rallied back from down 2-0 to defeat New Mexico Military and then swept Pratt on Friday. Frank Phillips swept Pratt and dropped a four-set back to No. 14 Seminole State on Friday.
Matches begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
JEFFERSON COLLEGE RECAP
The Lady Dragons dropped to 2-4 in five-set matches as Jefferson College overcame 23 attack errors and a stingy Hutchinson defense that netted four players with 12 or more digs.
HCC had its chances in the fifth set, but Jefferson took advantage of six points off hitting, service, ball-handling or net errors in the fifth and got four huge kills late by 6-foot-2 middle blocker Beta Dumancic to finish off the comeback.
Dumancic had 21 kills and three blocks to lead Jefferson (8-5). Brooke Simpson and Rinata Aisena had 10 kills each.
Sophomore Jordan Rehm finished with 13 kills and Haley had 11 to lead HCC. Haley hit a .322.
Sophomore Cassie Wiley had eight kills and 10 blocks. HCC had 14 blocks as a team. Hayley Young and Jade Nelson had six blocks each.
Defensively, the Lady Dragons were digging tough. Freshman libero Paige Forrester had a team-high 18 digs, while Alyssa Riffel had 16, Ashlyn Westerman had 13 and Young had 12. Young finished with 25 assists.
After holding off a late Jefferson charge to win the first, Hutchinson rallied from 12-10 and 15-14 down. Wiley stated the comeback with thee kills and three blocks and HCC went on a 7-2 run and took a two-set lead on a Rehm kill on set point.
Dumancic started to take over the match at that point. Seven kills in the third set by the Viking middle blocker and Jefferson outscored HCC 9-4 after the set was tied at 16-all. Dumancic and Aisena combined for seven fourth-set kills and once again Jefferson pulled away late in the set. Tied at 15-all, the Vikings scored 10 of the final 15 points of the set.
Rehm knocked down her 13th kill of the night to give HCC a fifth-set 7-5 lead, but Dumancic took over again with four kills late to finish off the Lady Dragons.
SEMINOLE STATE RECAP
The Lady Dragons were playing their sixth ranked opponent in the last seven matches in the opening match of the Caribbean Tan Classic.
Haley got Hutchinson out of the gates quick with six first-set kills as HCC grabbed a 1-0 lead on the 14th-ranked Trojans.
But the start of the second set was an ominous foreshadow of what was about to happen. HCC had four consecutive attack errors as Seminole State scored the first five points of the set and slammed the door on any Hutchinson upset bid as the Trojans dominated the final three sets.
Haley finished with 13 kills on .370 hitting to lead the Lady Dragons. Wiley finished with seven kills.
Young tallied 22 set assists. Rehm had 19 digs, Forrester had 13 and Young had 10 digs.
Hutchinson had three blocks in its opening-set victory and only two blocks over the final three sets.
Maryna Samoday finished with 13 kills to lead three Trojan players in double figures. Tory Kappel had 12 and Ashley Williams had 10.
