DODGE CITY – The Kansas Highway Patrol says a fatal three-vehicle accident in western Kansas was caused by the winter storm.

Killed was 21-year-old Roy Gayton of Dallas, Texas. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 59-year-old Argelio Menchaca Gayton, also of Dallas.

Two vehicles were following each other westbound on U-S 50, while the third vehicle was eastbound. The first westbound vehicle was a semi driven by 29-year-old John Martin of Pleasanton, Kansas, He struck head-on with Gatons vehicle, then the other westbound vehicle driven by 74-year-old James Franklin Pivonka of McCracken, Kansas, crashed into the collision.

The others in the accident may have suffered some injury, but were not transported to any hospital according to the highway patrol report.

The accident occurred shortly before 8 p-m, Wednesday on U-S Highway 50, about 13-miles east of Dodge City.

They say the accident is still under investigation.
