A 24-year-old man who reportedly absconded from Community Corrections was arrested late Wednesday night after a short high-speed chase that ended in a one vehicle accident.

According to a Hutchinson Police Department report, Juan A. Barrera Jr., was taken to jail just before midnight for felony flee and elude, reckless driving, felony theft, felony obstruction, driving while suspended, illegal display, leaving the scene of an injury accident, failure to give information, failure to report, no insurance and a warrant on an original charge of failing to appear in court on a charge of driving while suspended.

Police Detective Curtis Black say the chase started when an officer tried to make a stop for a traffic violation in the 100 block of South Lorraine. The chase then went through Careyville, then east on Avenue“G” at speeds of up to 80-miles per-hour before the suspect crashed the truck at “G” and Mayfield Road where it curves some. He hit a tree according to Black. Barrera then allegedly tried to flee on foot, but was located by a Kansas Highway Patrol Plane using a camera that detects body heat. He was quickly captured while in a field west of the accident scene. He was suffered some minor injuries and was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, treated and released, then taken to jail,

The truck he was in was reported stolen on November 8, from the 200 block of East 7th.

He made a court appearance Friday morning where he was told of the potential charges and bond was set at 5-thousand dollars. He will be back in court next Wednesday for a status hearing.

Barerra is listed as an absconder from Community Corrections for convictions from 2010 for possession of drugs and domestic battery. That according to the Kansas Department of Corrections website.
