One of the four people arrested in association with the burglary and damage to local churches was granted community corrections Thursday afternoon by Judge Trish Rose with an underlying sentence of 38-months.

But, there is a catch for 24-year-old Justin Branscom. The corrections in this case won’t begin until after he completes his prison term in another case that goes back to 2008.

Branscom was convicted for his part in the burglary cases and according to District Attorney Keith Schroeder apologized for his part in it which apparently impressed Judge Trish Rose. She went along with the defense request for departure and granted the two years community corrections.

He was involved in the burglary on July 22 of the Crossroads Christian Church, three burglaries on July 23, including Trinity United Methodist Church, First Congregational Church and the attempted break in at First Baptist Church. Then he was involved in the break in at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on July 27. That included damage to the windows, carpet, decorations, dishes, a computer monitor and drywall.

In the previous case, Branscom had been convicted for the fires at Alexander’s Jewelry and a home at 629 East 7th. He was sentenced to 24-months for each count and then granted 24-months community corrections. However, he violated those corrections twice and the second time, Judge Joe McCarville denied a defense request for a sanction and ordered the sentence served. That was back in September.

Branscom is one of four arrested in the cases. Others include 19-year-old Jordon Schmucker, 16-year-old Joshua Hickey and Desiree Mahoney.

Although Hickey is a juvenile, his cases were prosecuted in adult court and he was sentenced back in November to 32-months in prison, but then granted 24-months community corrections. However, he did violate his corrections and is currently serving a 30-days jail sanction because of it.
