A 58-year-old Hutchinson woman was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center after the vehicle she was driving collided with a semi on Yoder Road early Wednesday.

According to Reno County Sheriff Officials, at around 6:25 a-m, 30-year-old Darren Lee Schwab was driving a semi pulling an empty trailer north on Yoder Rd.

Schwab was approaching a vehicle driving north and estimated he was driving about 40-miles per-hour. On the Arkansas River bridge, he applied his brakes. The bridge at the time was covered in ice and due to the application of the brakes, Schwab began to lose control of the tractor and trailer. His semi ended up colliding with Shirley Hageman who was driving south on Yoder Rd.

Hageman’s vehicle ended up on the west shoulder of Yoder Rd. after being pushed backwards. Schwabs semi turned to the east and collided with the bridge rail and the guard rail.

Hageman was trapped in the vehicle and the door had to be pried open by fire personnel to extract her. She was transported to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Emergency Room to be treated for possible internal injuries. Schwab was not injured.

Both drivers were wearing seat-belts according to the sheriff’s office.
