A 30-year-old Wichita man who absconded from bond after and arrested in Iowa was in court Wednesday on the charges against him.

Tebelle Brooks was charged with drug crimes included possession of cocaine with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package drugs for sale. The alleged crimes occurring on February 1, 2012.

He apparently failed to appear in that case leading to a 75-thousand dollar bench warrant and was eventually located in Polk County, Iowa. He was in court Wednesday wanting a reduction in the bond which totaled 76-thousand, 500-dollars. His attorney, Bonnie Corrado told Judge Joe McCarville that he would remain in the area if released. She also told the judge that he had turned himself in on the warrant and is not a flight risk.

Brooks told Corrado that he turned himself in, but that statement was not exactly true. He was picked up by law enforcement on the warrants in Iowa and then waived extradition back to Kansas. He was then brought back to Hutchinson by Officers with the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

In court, Judge Joe McCarville asked him about being a flight risk. He asked the defendant, “what kind of fool do you think I am?” The defendant answered, “I don’t think you’re a fool.” The judge commented back, you say you’re not a flight risk, but “you flew.”

Instead of reducing the bond, Judge McCarville declined to lower the bond in the drug case, leaving it at 75-thousand dollars, and raised the bond in the aggravated failure to appear case from 15-hundred to 15-thousand dollars.

The drug case comes as result of two drug related searches, one for a vehicle he was in and one for a motel room he was staying at the Astro Motel. In the room, detectives allegedly found a quarter of an ounce of crack cocaine, packaging material and a digital scale.

The judge scheduled both cases for a preliminary hearing on April 9.
