The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team’s milestone victory on Sunday also offered another major revision to the program’s record book.
Head coach Sammy Lane, the only coach in program history, and the Lady Dragons captured their 100th victory all time with a 12-0 Jayhawk Conference victory over Dodge City at the USD 308 Athletic Complex.
Victory No. 100 comes in the program’s 127th game. Hutchinson is 100-25-2 since the program began in 2005.
“It’s a nice accomplishment, especially because I’ve seen them all,” Lane said. “You associate the different teams with the different victories and remember the girls who played for us. It’s a nice thing for the program getting to 100 wins.”
“It’s a really big deal,” added sophomore Madison Joyce. “We got a bunch of wins last year. We are continuing on this year, so it’s really good. I had no idea when I came here where the program was, but when I got here I thought to myself we have a lot to live up to.”
Sophomore Alicia Robinson set two team records with her career-high tying four assists on Sunday. She passes Chelsea Myers (2008-2009) for both the career and single-season assist records. Robinson now has 32 career assists and she has 17 assists for the season.
The Lady Dragons (9-2, 7-1 Jayhawk Conference) had three players with hat tricks, another team single-game record, and had three players who had at least eight points.
“We work well as a team everywhere,” Hetherington said. “We can do more combinations. It’s been really good.”
Freshman Melissa Hetherington had three goals – her fourth hat trick of the season – and a career-high three assists for a nine-point game. Hetherington now has 53 points and 24 goals for the season. Her 24 goals rank second on the freshman list, third on the single-season list and is tied for fourth on the HCC career goals scored list.
Sophomore Madison Joyce had three goals and two assists in her eight-point game. In addition to her four assists, Robinson also scored a pair of goals for an career-high-tying eight points.
The third Lady Dragon hat trick was from sophomore Pearl Slattery and she recorded her third game-winning goal of the season. Sophomore Logan Shupe was the only other goal scorer in the game.
“We have such good center forwards and we are even getting goals from our midfield,” Slattery said.
Hutchinson out-shot Dodge City 54-0. It’s the 13th time in program history that HCC has held an opponent without a shot. Freshman Eunice Figueroa (7-1) is credited with her third shutout of the season.
The Lady Dragons built a 7-0 lead at halftime. Slattery achieved her hat trick all in the first half. Slattery’s third goal of the half came from Robinson’s record-breaking assist.
“We are getting off to really good starts this year and in female soccer, you get a three-goal lead, the game is literally over,” Lane said. “It sets the tone for the entire day. It’s not by design, but the girls get a sense of urgency straightaway.”
Hutchinson plays at Northern Oklahoma at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Tonkawa, Okla.
GAME NOTES – Alicia Robinson now has 72 career points with is fifth on the career points list. Her 20 goals are 11th on the career list. … Pearl Slattery now has 71 career points with his sixth on the career list. Her 41 season points are eighth on the single-season list. Her 24 career goals are tied for fourth and her 15 goals for the season are tied for eighth. … Madison Joyce is ninth in career points with 63 and eighth in career goals with 23. … Hetherington is already tied for second on the single-season list and is second on the freshman points list with 53. … The 12-goal margin of victory tied for the sixth largest in program history and is the third time HCC has won by 12 goals this season. … HCC has scored 88 goals this season, which is tied for third all time with the 2008 Lady Dragons. … HCC is 8-1 vs. Dodge City and 7-0 in league-designated games.
