City Council Accepts HRC Committee Report (Video)

The Hutchinson City Council Tuesday accepted the report from the special committee assembled to give direction as to the future funding of the Hutchinson Recreation Commission, but took no further action as to how.

The council accepted the report from Committee Chair Eric Steinle and noted that the matter will go back to the school district so they can decide what course of action to take. Steinle recommended that the two entities work together to expand the tax base for the rec commission, but still keep it from city control.

Steinle said that while simply turning the rec commission over to the city might save tax payers some money by eliminating the administrative costs, it was not worth putting rec programs at risk in tough budget times.

USD-308 will now have to address the matter further before any action is taken by the city. If the two sides can’t come to some type of agreement, or a way to jointly fund the commission, then Steinle says the Rec Commission and USD-308 should just go on as before.
