The trial for a Hutchinson man accused of two counts of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officers is underway in Reno County District Court.

Christopher White is accused of battering Hutchinson Police Officers Chris Flynn and Robert Wylie last summer while they were trying to get him into custody.

They were apparently sent to check on the defendant’s welfare when he became combative and literally jumped on top of Officer Flynn. As they struggled, the officer at some point was knocked out and says he still has trouble remembering exactly what happened that night. He was transported on a spine board to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was examined.

He testified Tuesday that he was diagnosed as having a concussion as a result of the altercation. He also suffered multiple abrasions. He told the jury that he was off duty for 2-3 days then on light duty for several more days. Officer Wylie testified that he was also hurt during the exchange. He says he hurt both knees during the altercation.

The case centers on the two officers being asked to respond to a welfare check on an individual who was acting bizarre at the Kwik Shop at 4th & K-61. When they arrived, White was allegedly yelling and screaming for help and that he saw his father’s ghost. This as he rode a bicycle around in circles in the parking lot of the convenience store. Eventually he rode away from the officers even though they told him to stay and they decided he needed to be stopped so they started to follow him and get him to stop. When officer Flynn exited his car, that’s when White allegedly tackled him with them both going to the ground. The officer apparently attempted to tase White twice, but that was ineffective. This all allegedly occurring around 12:20 a-m, back on June 22, 2012.

The defense appears to be hinting that although a battery may have occurred against the two officers, at the most it would be a simple battery case and not an aggravated battery case.

The trial is expected to continue into Wednesday.
