The Sedgwick County Detention Center is making some changes effective next Monday. They say in a news release that due to recent changes in the Carry Concealed Law, the lobby of the Sedgwick County Jail will again be operated as a “secured” area.

The general public will only be allowed to take a locker key, wallet and identification into the secure portion of the lobby. Any citizen with a carry concealed permit may be allowed to secure their firearm in one of the on-site gun lockers. Visitors with babies will be allowed to carry in a bottle and two diapers.

Restricted items include: cell phones, cameras, electronics of any kind, strollers, baby carriers, bags and backpacks. Lockers on-site are available for temporary storage of any of these items. The lockers require a quarter to use and the quarter is refunded when the key is returned.

All visitors will be required to pass through a metal detector prior to entering the secure lobby.

Persons with medical conditions that prevent them from being exposed to a metal detector may be subject to a “pat” search.

They say they do expect there to be some minor delays in entering the secured lobby, but hope this will be quickly minimized as people become aware of our new procedures and properly prepare for entering the facility.
