A 56-year-old Hutchinson man captured in connection with a kidnapping and beating case from last month did make a court appearance Friday morning via-video from the county jail.

William Dale Runyon faces charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery involving the case last month when a man was able to escape the trunk of a vehicle in Salina back on September 21. Although the kidnapping ended there, it apparently started here.

In court he was granted a public defender and his next court appearance will be on October 30. There was no discussion of bond which is set at 150-thousand dollars.

Sheriff investigators got word Thursday that he might be at a residence in the 200 block of West 15th. As they approached the black work truck that he was in, he backed up in the alley onto Adams and nearly struck vehicles on that street. He then led law enforcement on a chase on Adams and Main, and various side streets in the city.

Sheriff Captain Steve Lutz says at some point, he actually lost some plywood that was in the back of the truck. He ended up on West 19th, where he ran the barricades near where officials were working the fatal fire. He couldn’t get through because of the fire trucks, so he stopped and ran from the vehicle. Hutchinson Police Detectives were at the fire to assist in that investigation and heard the scanner traffic. They then took off after Runyon on foot and were able to stop him in the driveway of a nearby residence.

Lutz says he will most likely face additional charges associated with the chase with law enforcement. That was not brought up in court Friday.
