The average age of a farm operator in the United States is 57-years, according to the U-S. Department of Agriculture’s latest census of agriculture. The majority of farm operators are between 45 and 64 years old, but the fastest growing group is 65 years and older. Farmers and landowners, whether large or small, have assets that are worth hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. As landowners and farmers consider the future some common questions may arise, especially when it comes to farm succession.

On Thursday February 27, K-State Research and Extension will be hosting a Farm Succession Planning Meeting. The meeting will be held at the Arlington Community Center at 900 W. Main St. in Arlington. Roger McEowen was an associate professor of agriculture law at Kansas State before joining Iowa State in 2004. From 1991-93 he practiced law in North Platte, Nebraska. Professor McEowen conducts approximately 80-100 seminars annually across the country for farmers, agriculture business professionals, lawyers, and tax professionals. He also conducts three radio programs. Registration is 15-dollars and is due to the Reno Extension Office by February 24. The meeting will go from 9:30 a-m to 2 p-m, with a lunch.
