The sentencing hearing for a Hutchinson man who entered a plea to a lesser charge in Reno County District Court involving the killing of another Hutchinson man was scheduled for Friday afternoon. However, thatt has now been continued after the defense attorney in the case became ill.

21-year-old Isaac Beltran, who was facing a trial on charges of intentional second degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm, entered a plea to unintentional second degree murder. The state then dropped the firearm charge.

Beltran was convicted in the shooting death of 26-year-old Dustin Brooks in the alley behind the home where Beltran lived at 203 North Cleveland on Halloween night in 2012. Brooks suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and died after emergency surgery failed at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

No new date has been set for sentencing by Judge Tim Chambers, however his court secretary told us it would probably be a couple of weeks down the road.
