Fort Riley soldiers returning from Iraq Thursday

FORT RILEY (AP) – After a yearlong deployment to Baghdad, a Fort Riley infantry brigade is coming home.

About 300 soldiers from the 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division are due to arrive Thursday from Iraq. More than 3,000 soldiers will be returning to the northeast Kansas post.

The unit deployed to Iraq in November and spent the past year conducting numerous missions designed to transfer responsibilities from U.S. forces to Iraqi units. It included closing down several security stations and transferring bases and property to the Iraqis or the U.S. State Department.

This was the brigade’s second deployment to Iraq since the division returned to Fort Riley from Germany. The first deployment was from October 2008 to September 2009.
