HCC Volleyball Team Faces Big Test For Sophomore Night Vs Dodge City

(HCC Sports Information)

The scenario is clear for the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team in terms of the Region VI Tournament.

Win on Wednesday night against Dodge City and the Lady Dragons secure fourth place in the Jayhawk West and a home first-round matchup with the Conquistadors in the opening round next on Tuesday. A loss on Wednesday means the Lady Dragons play at Dodge City in the opening round of regionals.

The Lady Dragons (12-18, 8-5 Jayhawk West) play host to Dodge City (17-16, 7-6) at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena in the final regular-season home match and final Jayhawk West home match of the season. HCC closes out the regular season with four matches at the Jefferson College Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Hillsboro, Mo.

Hutchinson holds a one-game lead over Dodge City entering the final round of conference matches. HCC played one of its best matches of the season on Sept. 28 at Dodge City in defeating the Conquistadors 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-16). Middle blockers Shayne Hayley and Cassie Wiley had huge matches in the first Dodge City meeting. Haley had seven kills and hit a .500. Wiley had six kills, hit a .667 and had three blocks.

The 2011 Lady Dragons have made dramatic improvement over last season and in particular since the calendar changed to October. HCC is 4-3 in October, but statistically, the Lady Dragons are hitting some 72 points and are averaging a kill per set higher than season totals. HCC has won two in a row with a big four-set victory over Seward County and a sweep of Garden City last week.

Since being swept by Barton, Dodge City has reeled off three-straight victories, including a pair of five-set victories over Colby and Pratt. Colby had been the hottest team in the league and the Conquistadors knocked off Pratt 15-1 in that fifth set.

Wednesday night will be Sophomore Night where sophomores Jordan Rehm and Cassie Wiley will be recognized.

The Dodge City match is also the Lady Dragons’ Toys For Tots night. Fans attending the game are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy. There will be a site inside the Sports Arena to drop off donations.
