HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 50-year-old Hutchinson man charged with attempted robbery for allegedly trying to grab a shoulder bag from an army recruiter was bound over for trial Tuesday.

The case against Jose Vasquez goes back to February 7, when a local recruiter apparently went into the McDonald’s at 4th & Walnut to meet a potential female recruit. Sgt. Stephen Casper says he waited at the restaurant for about 10-15 minutes and the female was a no show, so he s sentt a text to her and then left. She sent a text back saying she had been in the restroom the whole time, so he came back and parked along Walnut just east of the restaurant. As he was exiting his vehicle, he placed the strap of the backpack containing an army computer over his left shoulder. It was then that a man and woman approached him. The man later identified as Vasquez then demanded the bag. Sgt. Casper wasn’t sure what he said and asked “what?” Vasquez then allegedly tried to grab the strap of the bag. Sgt. Casper then kneed Vasquez in the upper thigh where he then fell to the ground. He says he then left and made a police report.

Judge Joe McCarville found probable cause for that case to go to trial

He revoked Vasquez probation in two other cases going back to last year. That included of a conviction for criminal threat when he allegedly threatened two people with a pair of kitchen shears. That was back in May of last year. The other case was a conviction for harassment by phone for a case from January.

Judge McCarville ordered the 1-year prison sentence be served for the criminal threat and the six months in the county jail for the harassment, but ran the two sentences concurrent.

Arraignment on the attempted robbery charge will be on June 2, in front of Judge Trish Rose.
