HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Trey Mullinax eagled on 17 to defeat Ian Davis and boost Alabama to a second straight National Championship.

Bob Papa of the Golf Channel said Mullinax “made the putt heard throughout Alabama.”

Alabama won the match 4-1. In addition to Mullinax dropping Davis, Bobby Wyatt defeated Talor Gooch; Cory Whitsett defeated Jordan Niebrugge; and Robby Shelton defeated Zachary Olsen.

Freshman faced Freshman in the Shelton/Olsen matchup. Alabama’s Shelton edged Oklahoma State’s Olsen by one hole. Shelton impressively carded six birdies on his last seven holes to finish victorious.

“We have a treat for us watching these two freshman the next few years. Great looking future for college golf with these two young men,” Lanny Wadkins of the Golf Channel said.

Talor Gooch’s 4-putt on 16 caused his loss to Bobby Wyatt. “I don’t know if I have ever seen that in a situation of really good players at this stage. Gooch has played so well and putted so well this week.  That is shocking,” Wadkins noted.

Wyndham Clark, a redshirt Freshman, was the only Cowboy to register a victory for Oklahoma State. He beat Tom Lovelady. Clark played in remembrance of his mother. “It has given me a better perspective in life and I think that has helped me with handling adversity and putting golf second to everything else in life,” Clark said.

The 4-1 finish seems like a blowout, but it didn’t seem that way for spectators at Prairie Dunes. “The final score is going to read  4-1 but it was a lot closer than that.  I really think it was Robby Shelton’s finish that turned the tide.  Zachary Olsen played an amazing round of golf and lost.  When you give it all you’ve got and shoot a 63 or 64 and lose, that’s just tough,” Wadkins said.
