HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 20-year-old Hutchinson man made a first appearance Friday on drug related charges in front of Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen.

Jacob Bugg faces charges of possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia to package drugs, personal use drug paraphernalia and possession of liquid codiene.

Reno County Sheriff Deputy Jack Trussell says he initiated a traffic stop just after midnight, Friday morning in the 500 block of North Hendricks. The deputy says when he made contact with occupants of the vehicle, he immediately smelled marijuana.

He then made the two occupants step out of the vehicle and allegedly found a prescription bottle which contained marijuana in the pocket of Bugg’s shorts. He was then placed under arrest for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, that being the prescription bottle which is often used as to store marijuana.

The deputy then conducted a search of the vehicle and allegedly found a glass mason jar that contained approximately 48.7-grams of marijuana, a digital scale and a box of zip-lock baggies. Also in the backpack was a liquid prescription bottle that contained liquid codeine.

The driver of the vehicle, Brittany Blackburn told the deputy that the backpack belonged to Bugg.

Bugg was advised of the additional charges he was being arrested for and at some point was read his Miranda rights, but declined to talk with the deputy.

His bond was set at $13,000.00 and in court, he requested a reduction of the bond which was denied by Judge McEwen. He’s expected back in court next Wednesday.

Blackburn was arrested for possession of marijuana, but managed to bond out. She’ll make a first appearance in court at a later date.
