A 28-year-old Hutchinson man with a fairly substantial past criminal history made a court appearance Monday via-video from the Reno County Jail after he was arrested over the weekend by Nickerson Police on charges of being in possession of meth, drug paraphernalia, being a felon in possession of a firearm with ammo, being in possession of drugs within a thousand feet of a school, and driving while suspended.

Richard Heller II, was stopped by a Nickerson Police Officer for driving a truck with no brake lights and that led to the discovery of the drugs and other items.

During the brief court hearing, Heller denied the weapon was his and said he was supposed to be working with a detective to show that. He also asked for a reduction of his bond of 24-thousand, 250, saying there was no way he could post that much.

But, Assistant District Attorney Andrew Davidson told of his past criminal history which showed numerous prior misdemeanor batteries, and a felony conviction for drugs. He was on community corrections for that conviction for a case that goes back to 2007. Heller told the judge he has been trying to keep his nose clean since that incident. Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen unimpressed with Heller’s argument denied the bond reduction, and he could be back in court on Wednesday.

The arrest came Saturday in Nickerson.
