Freshman Jatavious Stewart became the first Hutchinson Community College football player this season to earn NJCAA National Player of the Week honors.

Stewart, a 5-foot-11, 179-pound receiver/punt returner from Rock Hill, S.C., had a key punt return for a touchdown in the 15th-ranked Blue Dragons’ 42-17 come-from-behind victory over No. 17 Coffeyville last Saturday at Coffeyville.

With HCC trailing 14-6 in the third quarter, Stewart returned a punt 66 yards, receiving three key blocks along the way, into the end zone. With the two-point conversion, the Dragons tied the game at 14-all.

Stewart had a career-high 223 all-purpose yards. He had five catches for 83 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown reception that put the Blue Dragons on top 21-17 early in the fourth quarter. Stewart also has a part of the Blue Dragons rolling up 343 yards on the ground with 59 yards on 11 carries out of the “Wildcat” formation.

Stewart and the Blue Dragons will play host to Coffeyville in the Region VI Playoff semifinals at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Gowans Stadium.
