Siemens wind hit milestone

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Siemens wind nacelle plant in Hutchinson has become part of a major milestone, as the German company wind turbine 1hit the 10GW installation mark for wind turbines in the Americas.

The manufacturer has erected more than 5600 machines in Canada, the US and South America, including Peru, Chile and Brazil. Siemens reached the figure with the commissioning of the thirty-eighth turbine at the 270MW South Kent wind project, in Ontario, Canada, by Samsung and Pattern Energy.

Siemens opened its Americas headquarters for wind in Orlando, Florida, in 2005. In 2006, the company started producing turbine blades in Fort Madison, Iowa. Following intense competition between several cities, Siemens opened the nacelle assembly facility in Hutchinson, in 2010.
