The teams remain the same, but the venue and the stakes have changed.

Last week’s 42-17 Hutchinson Community College victory at Coffeyville gave the Blue Dragons home field for the playoff rematch with the Red Ravens.

That Region VI semifinal matchup comes at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Gowans Stadium.

Sunday’s meeting will be the seventh playoff matchup between Hutchinson and Coffeyville. The Dragons are 1-5 in the first six, but the one win came in 1995, a thrilling 17-16 overtime victory Blue Dragon victory.

The Blue Dragons are 13-0 all-time at Gowans Stadium in Region VI/Jayhawk Conference playoff games. HCC is only 4-18 away from Gowans in the postseason. Last year, the Dragons had to rally from 17-7 down in the third quarter to defeat Independence 24-17.

HCC will be bidding for its third Region VI title game berth in four seasons and for its fifth appearance overall.

The Coaches
Hutchinson: Rion Rhoades is in his fifth season with the Blue Dragons. He is 33-19 at HCC and 40-24 overall in his sixth season as a collegiate head coach.

Coffeyville: Darian Dulin is in his fourth season with the Grizzlies. He is 22-18 with the Red Ravens.

About the 2011 Blue Dragons
The Blue Dragons shows a few new formations in trying to re-energize the ground game last week against Coffeyville. It worked to the tune of 343 yards on the ground and it big-play capability returning in the fourth quarter of a 42-17 victory.

Hutchinson continues to be the NJCAA scoring leader at 51.7 points per game and is eighth in the nation in total offense at 478.7 yards per game. The Blue Dragons are seventh in the nation in rushing at 248.0 yards per game. HCC ranks 16th in the nation in passing offense at 230.7 yards per game.

Quarterback Elliott Alford continues to set a scintillating pace for the Blue Dragons. The new career Total Offense leader at HCC is second in the nation in passing accuracy at 67.7 percent (138 of 204) for 1,990 yards with school-record-tying 26 touchdown passes and only three interceptions.  

All-American Cordarrelle Patterson has a team-high 48 receptions for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns. Patterson has accounted for 1,520 all-purpose yards (268 rushing, 770 receiving, 482 on kickoff returns) and 18 touchdowns.

Freshmen receivers Jatavious Stewart and Miguel Johns are also having great seasons. Stewart has 36 catches for 563 yards and nine TDs. Johns has 28 receptions for 443 yards and three scores.

Redshirt freshman Deveon Dinwiddie is HCC’s leading rusher. Dinwiddie has 712 yards and a 5.7 yard per carry average and 11 touchdowns. Freshman Terrell Lane comes off a big game last week against Coffeyville. He has 370 yards and seven TDs. HCC has 65 rushing touchdowns in eight games. Sophomore Derek Campbell has 263 yards and two TDs, Alford has 321 yards and five scores and

Defensively, sophomore safety Duane Sims leads the Blue Dragons with 75 tackles. Linebacker Tim Edmond is second with 68 tackles.

HCC is allowing 19.4 points, 167.3 rushing yards, 175.9 passing yards and 343.2 total yards per game. The Blue Dragons have forced 21 turnovers. Sophomore Spencer Vanderbogart has a team-high three interceptions. Freshman Beau Bell has a team-high four quarterback sacks.

On special teams, punter Kody Cook leads the Jayhawk Conference would be second in the NJCAA if he had enough attempts at 41.0 yards per punt. Kicker Michael Mesh is 57 of 63 on extra points and 2 of 4 on field goals. Patterson continues to lead the Jayhawk in kickoff returns at 48.2 yards per return with three touchdowns.  Stewart is first in punt returns at 17.2 yards per return with one touchdown.

Scouting Coffeyville
Entering the Region VI semifinals, Coffeyville has dropped two of its last three albeit against Butler and Hutchinson. Coffeyville finished the regular season  6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Offensively, the Ravens are led by Tyler Najee, who had a big game last week against HCC with 315 passing yards. Najee has thrown for 1,639 yards and has completed 52 percent of his passes (125 of 240) with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. His favorite receiver is Jordan Jenkins, who has 50 catches for 712 yards and three touchdowns. He had seven catches for 158 yards and a TD last week against the Dragons.

Jamarius Green and Hayden Groves are Coffeyville’s top rushers. Green has rushed for 650 yards and five touchdowns with a 6.4-yard-per-carry average. He is sixth in the Jayhawk Conference. Groves is 10th in the conference with 506 yards and six touchdowns.

Coffeyville is averaging 27.9 points per game offensively. The Red Ravens are averaging 212.4 yards rushing, 182.1 yards passing and 394.6 total yards per game.

The Ravens are third in the league in scoring defense at 19.4 points per game. Coffeyville is allowing 171.7 yards rushing and 138.9 yards passing per game.

David Cooper has a team-high 102 tackles and 13 tackles for loss. Martrell Spaight has 82 total tackles and 8.5 TFLs.

Briean Boddy has four interceptions and three passes broken up.

Defensively, Coffeyville has 22 takeaways.

Blue Dragons’ Postseason History
This will be the 37th Region VI/Jayhawk Conference playoff game in Blue Dragon postseason history. HCC has also appeared in 15 junior college bowl games.

HCC qualified for the four-team Region VI playoffs for the fourth-straight season. The 2008 Region VI Playoffs were the first postseason games for HCC since 2005, and the first since Region VI revamped its playoff format before the 2006 season.

Last season, HCC defeated Independence 24-17 at Gowans Stadium, but lost 48-0 to Butler in the title game at El Dorado.

Hutchinson is 17-19 in postseason games not including bowl games.

Hutchinson is 13-0 in playoff games at Gowans Stadium and 4-17 on the road and 0-1 on neutral fields.

HCC went 11-3 in the quarterfinals before that round was dropped after 2005. The Dragons are 5-12 in semifinal games.

The Blue Dragons are now 1-4 in Region VI championship games – also appearing in 1982, 1994, 1995 and 2008.

Series History vs.  Coffeyville
This will be the 79th meeting between Hutchinson and Coffeyville in a series that dates back to 1932. The teams will meet for the second-straight week

Coffeyville is one of two Jayhawk Conference teams – Garden City is the other – that Hutchinson trails in an all-time series with. The Blue Dragons are 30-54-4 against Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons are 13-21-2 in games played in Hutchinson, but only 7-33 in games played at Coffeyville. Last week’s 42-17 victory helped Hutchinson snap an 0-7 run in games played at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
