Lady Dragons Overcome Slow Start To Topple Labette In QB Classic

One night after scoring the second-most points in team history, offense was a little harder to come by for the seventh-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team on Saturday night in the final game of the Quarterback Classic at the Sports Arena.

Trailing by as many as six points early and only scoring nine points over the first 6 ½ minutes, the Lady Dragons finally seized control late in the first half and defeated Labette 70-49 to finish the Quarterback Classic undefeated.

Hutchinson trailed 10-4 with 16:11 left in the first half. The Lady Dragons were still down 14-9 at the 13:31 mark of the opening half. Chelsea Small’s 3-pointer with 4:18 to play capped an 11-5 run and gave HCC the lead for good at 20-19.

The Lady Dragons led 28-25 at halftime, but took control of the contest with a 14-4 run over the first 5:25 of the second half to lead 42:29 with 14:25 to play in the game. Labette never got to within single digits again.

Small had her second-straight double-double to lead the Lady Dragons (2-0) with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Small also added two assists, two rebounds and two blocked shots.

Sophomore Alysse Barlow had 17 points and five assists. She was 7 of 11 from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Sophomores Laura Patrick and Lanicia Lawrence added nine points each.

Hutchinson shot 42.2 percent (25 of 59) from the field, including 9 of 22 from 3-point range. HCC was 11 of 15 from the foul line. The Lady Dragons outrebounded Labette 44-30, but had 19 turnovers.

Chaminya Reeves had a game-high 19 points, but on 5 of 17 shooting to lead the Cardinals (0-2). Shawnee Philips added 12 points. The Cardinals were held to 33.3 percent shooting (15 of 45), including 3 of 15 from 3-point range and 16 of 29 from the foul line. Labette had 20 turnovers.

The Lady Dragons will play Neosho County and Marshalltown on Friday and Saturday in the Hutch Clinic Classic at the Sports Arena.
