Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson confirmed to us today that a report of an incident involving a local public defender and a prosecutor has led to the a investigative report being sent to the Attorney General’s Office.

The case centers on the alleged incident where Public Defender Bonnie Corrado alleges she was restrained from leaving Judge Joe McCarville’s courtroom, then alleges she was battered in the hallway by the prosecutor. Sheriff Henderson wouldn’t confirm that the prosecutor was Steve Maxwell, but both Maxwell and District Attorney Keith Schroeder commented to us that there was no physical contact with Corrado.

Apparently, on October 28, Judge McCarville had ordered 54-year-old Matias Garcia to jail for 90-days for this third DUI. The defendant had been expedited from Texas according to Schroeder and was starting to leave the courtroom. Maxwell apparently told the defendant that he had to stay until someone from the jail could arrive to take him into custody. Corrado apparently indicated that she wanted to talk with her client in the hallway, and according to Schroeder, Maxwell again started that he needed to stay in the courtroom, and according to Schroeder, there was no physical contact.

Corrado apparently reported the incident to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office alleging that she was restrained by the prosecutor, which he denies.

Sheriff Henderson says that they did an investigation on the allegation and then sent the report to the Attorney General’s Office for consideration on any action being taken against Maxwell.
