Two members of the 2011 Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earned Jayhawk West postseason honors this week.
Freshman middle blocker Shayne Haley was named to the first team of the 2011 Jayhawk West postseason team. Sophomore middle Cassie Wiley was named to the second team.
HCC’s two middles were two major reasons why the Lady Dragons saw a 10-win improvement and advancement all the way to the Region VI loser’s bracket final. The Lady Dragons finished 16-23 overall and 9-5 in the Jayhawk West to finish fourth.
SHAYNE HALEY
The 6-foot freshman middle from Katy, Texas put together a solid season in which she finished the season ranked in three freshman statistical categories.
Haley averaged 1.81 kills per set and had a .204 hitting percentage this season. She tied for second on the team with 49 services aces. Haley also averaged 1.33 digs per set and was second on the team with 128 total blocks (36 solo blocks), averaging 0.88 blocks per set.
Haley’s 262 kills ranked 10th on the HCC freshman kills list. Her 128 total blocks ranked seventh on the freshman list and her 0.88 kills/set ranked 10th on the freshman list.
Haley had a season-high 18 kills against Air Force Prep on Aug. 27. Her season-high hitting percentage was .526 against Garden City on Sept. 5 (11 kills, 1 error, 19 attacks). She had 14 digs against Colby on Nov. 5 and a season-high nine total blocks against Pratt on Oct. 10.
CASSIE WILEY
Wiley, a 6-1 sophomore from Wellington, closed out her Lady Dragon volleyball career in fifth place on the all-time blocks list with 274.
This season, Wiley tallied 168 total blocks (56 solo blocks), which was eighth on HCC’s single-season list. Her 1.15 blocks per set ranked 10th on the single-season list and tied for 16th in the NJCAA national statistics this season. She had a career-high 10 single-match blocks against Jefferson College.
Wiley tallied 258 kills and hit .244 this season.
She had a career-high 14 kills twice against South Mountain and Barton and a 13-kill match against Dodge City. She hit .667 against Dodge City (6 kills, 0 errors, 9 attacks) for her career-high mark in that category.
