GALVA, Kan. — No new information has been released, but the National Transportation Safety Board says a preliminary report could be out in a few weeks into the collision of two Union Pacific trains in McPherson County Sept. 25.

An east bound train struck the last several cars and a locomotive of a west bound train that was pulling onto a siding near Galva. The N.T.S.B. would not release any new information, but did say a preliminary report would be out soon in the accident that did not result in any injuries but did destroy three locomotives and about 30 railroad cars.

While the area was signaled and under dispatch control, the N.T.S.B. wants to know if Positive Train Control would have prevented the accident. P.T.C. is being installed in all major railroads to help prevent such events from happening.

The very expensive and somewhat controversial program uses G.P.S. to position trains and stop them if they are in danger of an accident, even if the locomotive engineer fails to do so.
