HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson Police Officer was involved in a shooting Monday afternoon in the 300 block of East 10th.

According to Police Chief Dick Heitschmidt, the shooting happened at 300 E. 10th. The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Justin L. Matthews. He was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, and then to a Wichita hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the shoulder and is listed in stable condition.

Police were called at 4:14 p.m. on the report of an armed man and the individual could be heard in the background making threats. At around 4:17 p.m., Sgt. Josh Radloff arrived at the scene and confronted Matthews. Approximately 30 seconds after arriving on scene, Sgt. Radloff advised that he heard shots fired. E.M.S. and Fire Units were then called to the scene. Matthews had been wounded, but what led to the officer firing at Matthews wasn’t released by police, saying that it’s still under investigation. But he was shot in the yard of the home of his mother who had made the initial 911 call. Officer Radloff was the only officer present when the shooting occurred.

Radloff is a 16-year veteran police officer and has been a sergeant for the past seven years. He has been placed on administrative leave which is common practice with an officer-involved shooting.

The K.B.I. was called to handle the investigation and the District Attorney’s Office has also been involved.
