HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council gave approval to put the sales tax question for the sports arena renovation project on the ballot.

If approved by voters in the April election, a 0.35 percent sales tax would be used to fund $29 million in renovations to the arena. The action came on the heels of other news surrounding the arena. That came in the form of a letter from the NJCAA that stated they were ready to sign a 25-year contract for keeping the tournament in Hutchinson, provided the sales tax vote passes. The NCJAA had indicated that they might seek out new venues for the tournament if the improvements were not made.

The renovations to the arena include new entry ways, ADA compliant restrooms and seating, new heating and air conditioning, improved locker rooms and media space, and two new gyms that would include training facilities and more storage.
